Reagan Review

Making a difference

By Mia Vargas Staff Writer

At Ronald Reagan Doral Senior High School there is a club offered called Bison Buddies. The purpose of the club is to provide a social hub for special needs students. I decided to run as the president last year. At first, my plan was to create my own social inclusive club, only to find out there was one that already existed. The reason why I decided to jump head first into this is because I have a huge passion for interacting and giving back to people with special needs. My brother David is 10 years old and is diagnosed with Autism, he is the biggest challenge and the biggest blessing. He has challenged him to be patient and has blessed me by being the best brother I could ever ask for. In my family we all have to come together as a team to provide my brother with what he needs. So I became the president because I would love for my brother to be able to have a social life and a club he can join someday to make new friends and meet people. As the president, I’ve had the opportunity to get to know these students on a personal level. My main goal is for these students to be able to have an active social life and make long lasting friendships. Within the club we have different events such as field trips and small parties where we get to listen to music, eat, and talk about interests. Some of the students play for Special Olympics, sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics allows them to stay fit, find a sport that they love, and compete. We also do different events at school to bring awareness, we held a table during lunch for National Bullying Prevention Day.  was able to educate students on statistic about bullying and how they should treat everyone in the building the same. Another event that we do is called the R word campaign, we give out wristbands and have people sign a huge poster pledging to not use the R word. All we want for these students is the best future and to feel accepted in today’s society. Each and every one of the special needs students are so unique in their own way. Once you get to know them yourself you will be mind blown with their hidden talents.
